Упражнения: Numbers

Числа

Watch the video and choose the correct answers

If you decide to choose accounting as a career, you'll have to deal with numbers a lot. Do you know how to say numbers in English? For example, this one? Let's check. This number is a hundred and fifty-two trillion eight hundred and sixty-three billion four hundred and seventy-four million nine hundred and twenty-five thousand and sixteen. Not as difficult as it may seem. Remember the following: we have one hundred, one thousand, one million, one billion and one trillion. There are numbers bigger than a trillion, but they are rarely used. Instead of "one", you can use "a", so you can say "a hundred", or "a thousand" and so on.

Let's have a closer look at how we say numbers. So, this number is one hundred and fifty-two, or you can say "a hundred and fifty-two", or you can also say "one fifty-two". And that's actually all you need to know to read big numbers because we just add the words "trillion", "billion", "million" or "thousand". Look: one hundred and fifty-two trillion eight hundred and sixty-three billion four hundred and seventy-four million nine hundred and twenty-five thousand and sixteen. Notice that we don't say the words "billion", "million" and so on in plural: it's "four hundred and seventy-four million", not "hundreds" and "millions".

Now, pay attention to where the word "and" goes. It doesn't go where the commas are; it goes after the first number. One hundred and fifty-two trillion eight hundred and sixty-three billion four hundred and seventy-four million nine hundred and twenty-five thousand and sixteen.

Let's imagine we change "four" here to a "zero". Then the word "and" disappears: one hundred and fifty-two trillion eight hundred and sixty-three billion seventy-four million nine hundred and twenty-five thousand and sixteen. Now let's imagine we have more zeros. So, this number would be fifty-two trillion sixty-three billion seventy-four million twenty-five thousand and sixteen. So, no "ands" here. The only "and" we still need is the one before "sixteen".

1. What's the right way to read 2,564?

2 thousands 5 hundreds and sixty-four 2 thousand 5 hundred and sixty-four 2 thousand and 5 hundred and sixty-four
Check why

We say hundred/thousand (singular), not hundreds/thousands (plural) when the number is mentioned: say a, one, two, three thousand. The verb is plural, except when an amount of money is mentioned:

  • Five hundred people are going to attend the concert.
  • Three thousand dollars was transferred from your bank account.

Without number or quantity, we can say hundreds of/thousands of: hundreds of students.

2. What's the right way to write down three thousand seven hundred and eleven as a number?

3711 3.711 3,711
Check why

In most English-speaking countries, a comma is used as the thousands separator (separates thousands from hundreds). A point is used as a decimal separator (separates a number from its fractional part).

3. How many times will you pronounce "and" while reading 598,073,04?

1 2 3
Check why

We put "and" after the first number and always at the end, that's why we read: five hundred and ninety-eight million seventy-three thousand and forty-one.

Listen to an expert talking about the best countries for a career in accounting. Order the countries according to salaries: from highest to lowest

The job of an accountant is in high demand in any country. So, if you have chosen this profession, you may consider moving to another country. Of course, you may need specific certification and language skills, but the accounting skills themselves are pretty much the same everywhere.

So, I'm going to give a short overview of 5 countries where, on average, accountants are paid more than in other places. The information refers to the year 2019.

Let's start with the USA. There, accountants are among the highest-paid in the world and are hugely in demand. On average, an American accountant earns $54,680 a year.

In Europe, Iceland would be a good country for a career in accounting. Despite its small size, Iceland has offices of all the major accounting firms. Moreover, it's one of the highest-paying countries in the world. An accountant in Iceland makes $55,260 a year.

But of course, that's not as much as in Switzerland with its average salary of $88,570 a year. Well, it's not surprising: the economy of Switzerland is built upon finance and banking. That's a very desirable destination for accountants.

In Switzerland's neighbouring country, Austria, an accountant has an average yearly salary of $56,910. Austria is one of Europe's most financially stable countries, so it's definitely a good place for a career in accounting.

And one more country I'd like to mention is Monaco. After Vatican City, it's the smallest country in Europe, but at the same time, an important financial location. Monaco is a major banking centre, and there's plenty of work for accountants, who can make $71,000 a year there.

I also wonder which of the Big 4 firms is the biggest in terms of revenue and number of employees? I have some data on this if you're also interested.

Listen to the audio and complete the table for the Big 4. Type the correct figures, paying attention to punctuation

Remember:

In most English-speaking countries, a comma is used as the thousands separator (separates thousands from hundreds), e.g. There are 10,000 (ten thousand) employees in the company.

A point is used as the decimal separator (separates a number from its fractional part), e.g. The revenue of the company is $10.5 billion (ten point five/ten and a half).

To find out more about the Big 4, I'm going to visit their official websites and compare some numbers.

Each of the Big 4 firms operates in about 150 countries of the world, and all together they give jobs to more than a million employees. Let's have a closer look at these numbers and the revenue for each firm in 2019.

In terms of revenue, Deloitte, an Anglo-American network, headquartered in London, was the first. In 2019, it made 46.2 billion dollars. Deloitte also employs more staff than other firms: 312,000 people.

PwC, which has its headquarters in New York, was the second in terms of revenue, with 42.4 billion dollars. In 2019, 276,000 people worked for this company.

Ernst & Young, headquartered in London, is a workplace to 284,000 employees who generated 36.4 billion dollars for the company in 2019.

KPMG is the only of the Big 4 firms which is Anglo-Dutch and not Anglo-American. So, its headquarter is in Amstelveen, Netherlands. KMPG has the smallest number of employees, 219,000 people, and it was also the last in terms of revenue, with 29.8 billion dollars.

Задания — огонь! Жаль только, что навык устной речи никак не проверишь здесь. Если хотите потренировать именно речь, то мне лично понравились Skyeng Talks: недорого и времени много не отнимает.
