My name is Anthony. I am a qualified British teacher who has taught at all levels in the UK: formally in primary and secondary schools and informally at the post-eighteen level. My specialism is the Humanities. I have a Masters in Biblical Studies from King’s College, University of London and am currently studying for a PhD at Exeter University. This involves looking at the use of the word «slave» in Paul’s Letter to the Romans and how that would have been received in Neronian Rome.

 My motivation around teaching is about promoting greater critical thinking and better engagement between peoples from different cultures and religions. I spent six years working in London as a community cohesion specialist which meant helping politicians and residents addressing issues that stopped communities integrating. This involved working with organisations like St Pancras and Kings Cross stations, University College London, Senate House, Birkbeck College, the British Museum, the British Library, the Metropolitan Police and representatives of the different faith and cultural communities resident in London. This work eventually inspired me to want to teach as a lot of the problems I encountered in this work were down to poor education.

 I am very keen on encouraging a learning culture called «growth mindset». I believe that people’s most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work — brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Students who embrace growth mindsets — the belief that they can learn more or become smarter if they work hard and persevere — tend to learn more, learn it more quickly, and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their learning and skills. My style of teaching is very much about enabling the student, so the lesson will be centred around you. I will want to make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable and so the first part of our first lesson will be focused on getting to know one another, establishing what you want to achieve and finding out how you learn best. The great benefit of one to one lessons is that I can put all of my energy into my one student, you, and into helping you to succeed.
