My name is John and I come from a small farming town in South Africa. I am presently living in the buzzing seaside city of Danang in Vietnam, where I enjoy exploring the nearby forests and beaches, surfing, and trying to improve my skills as a writer.

I am a qualified teacher and have taught English here in Vietnam for about a year, at a range of levels and abilities. Most of my experience has been in IELTS speaking exam preparation, where a lot of my students attained scores of 6.5 and higher. But I also enjoy teaching general informal communication English that has a more practical day to day use for the student. For example I enjoy getting my students to understand the correct use of certain slang words and innuendos, so that when you speak to a native English speaker at home or on your travels, you can talk like a natural. They say you are only fluent in a language when you understand the slang!

I have an Honours degree in Geology, and worked as mineral exploration geologist looking for gold and other minerals all over Africa. After a while I decided to change my career path and become a teacher. I myself enjoy the challenge of studying new languages. I can speak a handful including Spanish and Afrikaans, and am currently a very lazy Vietnamese student! I find that learning a new language while teaching a language helps me put myself in my students’ shoes and understand the difficulties they are having. It has also done a lot for my teaching methodology, and helped me encourage students to keep trying to better themselves and aim for success. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Lastly, what can I say to all of you hard-working students out there? In my opinion the trick to learning a new language is to practice and study frequently for a short period at a time, rather than bore yourself out with lengthy study sessions. Have fun doing it and you will learn a lot quicker!
