My name’s Cynthia Ferrer and I’m a Mexican English teacher who lives in Ireland. I became an English teacher in 2005 when I did a Diploma in English Language Teaching in Puebla, Mexico and I have been giving classes ever since. Throughout my career I’ve done other teacher development courses and attended seminars where I have learnt new techniques and approaches to teaching. In Mexico I worked as an English teacher in three universities and in a language school. This gave me the opportunity to work with students from 8 to 70 years old! I have experience teaching at levels A1 up to C1 from the Common European Framework of Reference.

When I was young, I never thought I would become an English teacher one day. I went to university and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computing, but the fact that I got married and had children too soon prevented me from developing in this area. Years later, I decided it was time to seek a career and I thought it would be a good idea to become an English teacher because I loved English and I wanted a flexible schedule. This was the beginning, but I gained great satisfaction doing the job and soon I fell in love with my profession. What I enjoy most is meeting students and learning about their lives, their interests and their dreams. Each student I’ve met has taught me something valuable about friendship and about fighting to achieve their goals in life. I feel very fortunate.

I strongly believe that learning and teaching are all about collaboration. The teacher isn’t the one who owns the knowledge and the student isn’t just the recipient of this knowledge. Learning happens when student and teacher work together and exchange their knowledge of the world. The student is bound to learn in a more significant way when he or she discovers the meaning of a word or the pattern of a structure, for example. In this way, the teacher’s role is more that of a facilitator or guide that supports the student throughout his or her learning process.
