My name is Daniel.  I have a Master’s Degree in English with an emphasis in English Literature from California State University, Northridge (CSUN.)  During my time there I specialized in both Shakespeare and British Modernist Writers. I did my Master’s Thesis on Gender, the Body, and Women in British and French Literature from 1600 to Modern Day, including such authors as William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Jonathan Swift, Lady Mary Wortley Montague, the Marquis de Sade, Choderlos de Laclos, Jane Austen, William Makepeace Thackeray, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Bernard Shaw, and Samuel Beckett.  In addition, while at CSUN, in 2015, I won the Eva Latif Award, which is given to the best essay on Children’s Literature, mine being on Biblical themes of life, death, purity, corruption, and resurrection present in the Harry Potter series.

From all of that, you can probably gather that I have an incredible passion for literature, which is one of my prime motivations for teaching. I love incorporating literary examples and passages into my English lessons, so while my students are learning English, they’re also learning literature from A to Z! I have found this both helps my students stay interested in topics we discuss, and also gives them a means to help remember new vocabulary and sounds. I have ben tutored English for a few years now.  For a semester, at CSUN, I was an Instructional Student Assistant to one of my professors, assisting in a British Modernism class. I have previously taught online with WROFF and First Future, online teaching services based in Denmark and China, respectively. I have tutored students from a wide variety of linguistic backgrounds, including Danish, Chinese, and of course, living here in California, Spanish. In addition, I have worked for more than five years in copywriting and article writing online.

As stated, I typically work with both the provided materials for a class as well as a piece of literature or two which I feel will both be interesting to the student and which can also help them learn their vocabulary and letter/word sounds in a more concrete, memorable manner. I also take feedback from my students as to what they enjoy, and work accordingly. When I taught a Danish girl with WROFF, she liked Harry Potter, so I would sometimes try and relate lessons back to that, and tried to find literature which matched her interests. Things I enjoy doing in my free time include: reading (I think we’ve established this, if you’re a book lover you’ll love studying with me, watching sports (baseball, hockey, American football), listening to music, writing, and watching art movies. It is my firm belief that every language is beautiful in its own way. Every language has produced its share of great authors. Be proud of yourself and your language — and I welcome you to join me in learning the language I love so dearly!
